Paintings on Transparent Surfaces, 2011-2012
By painting on both sides of a substantial and transparent sheet of plexiglass, Procopio’s paintings show a dissection of the painting process. Her applications of paint reveal or obscure marks, colors and the location of paint marks within a complexly layered composition. As the viewer explores both sides of the image, turns the image upside down, and notices how the image appears when it lies on top of different colored surfaces, the viewer readjusts what he/she recognizes as important. These images can be adapted to any circumstances or preference of the viewer, while still maintaining the artist’s theoretical interest and personal expression with color and form. Procopio’s work is rooted in the idea of an artist’s informal play and dependence on a natural personal bias in form, color and concept while being mindful of the materiality, functionality, and history of paintings.
